Director's Message

Greetings, Human Rights Champions!

Firstly, I would like to wish each one of you a belated Happy 2017 and Gong Xi Fa Cai on behalf of the AI Malaysia crew. I hope you have had an amazing start to 2017! Thank you, also, for the continuous support you have given us throughout 2016.

I wanted to share with you the wonderful success that we have had with our Write For Rights campaign that we launched in December 2016 and which will be featured in this issue of our newsletter. We worked on four cases this year: Edward Snowden (USA), Johan Teterissa (Indonesia), Zaynab Jalalian (Iran) and Annie Alfred (Malawi). With the support of you, our valued Human Rights Champions, several letter-writing events took place in the month of December. Supporters from across Malaysia attended these events and wrote hundreds of postcards for those whose basic human rights are being attacked. Solidarity was also shown through petitions, emails, Tweets, Facebook posts, photos, and drawings. I am extremely delighted to announce that a milestone achievement of 38,000 actions were accounted for this campaign in Malaysia alone! This contributed to the over 2 million actions received globally. Well done, you!

To know more about our current campaigns and to sign any of our current petitions please use the links found under the “Get Involved!” section of our web page.

Finally, thank you for inspiring us to continue to do the work that we do. Amnesty International is a member-led organisation. If not for you, we would not be anywhere. Let us continue to grow the movement in Malaysia and make an impact towards changing our nation, and the world, for the better.

Fondly,

Shamini Darshni Kaliemuthu
