Adam Adli verdict another attempt to silence dissent, says Amnesty

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL MALAYSIA PRESS RELEASE

Amnesty International Malaysia is deeply concerned by the on-going crackdown on freedom of expression in Malaysia.

Today, student activist Adam Adli was sentenced under the Sedition Act to one year imprisonment merely for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression.  This verdict marks yet another blatant attempt by the Malaysian authorities to silence critical dissent. His sentence must be overturned immediately.

Also today, yet another person has been arrested and questioned by the police under the oppressive Sedition Act. Syafiq Abdul Wahid, an airport cargo employee, was arrested reportedly for comments he made on social media.

For too long the Sedition Act has been used as a political tool to arrest and imprison opposition politicians and human rights activists. It is a draconian piece of legislation which does not comply with international human rights law and standards.

Amnesty International Malaysia calls on Prime Minister Najib Razak to keep his 2012 promise and repeal the Sedition Act now.

Amnesty International Malaysia also urges the Prime Minister to ensure that people detained under the Sedition Act and other charges are free from torture and other forms of cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment.
